To keep your alloy jewelry looking beautiful and to prevent it from tarnishing or changing color, follow these simple care instructions.
-
Keep it Dry:
- Water and humidity are alloy jewelry's biggest enemies.
- Remove it before showering, swimming, or washing your hands.
- Sweat also breaks it down so avoid wearing during intense workouts as the salt in sweat accelerates tarnishing and can cause the metal to turn your skin green.
- Always put your jewelry on last - after your lotion, perfume, hairspray, and makeup have completely dried. The chemicals in beauty products quickly corrode alloy metals.
-
Cleaning it Safely:
- Because alloy jewelry is often plated, harsh chemical cleaners will strip away the finish.
- Daily maintenance: after wearing, gently wipe each piece with a soft, lint-free cloth (like a microfiber cloth or an old cotton t-shirt) to remove surface oils and sweat.
- Deep cleaning: if it looks dull, mix a few drops of mild, fragrance-free dish soap with warm water. Dip the cloth in the soapy water, wring it out completely so it is just barely damp, and gently wipe the piece.
- Dry completely: Never submerge the jewelry. Wipe it dry immediately with a clean towel and let it air-dry completely before storing.
-
Proper Storage:
- Air and moisture cause alloy to oxidize, so open-air jewelry dishes are not ideal for long-term storage.
- Seal them up: store pieces individually in small, airtight ziplock bags to block out oxygen.
- Keep them separate: don't mix different metals or let pieces rub together, as this causes scratches and accelerates tarnishing.
- Toss a small silica gel packet (the ones found in new shoe boxes) into your jewelry storage box to absorb any trapped moisture.
